Çeşme: History and Location

It is thought that Çeşme was called Cyssus in ancient times, got its current name from the "fountains" from which the sailors supplied water. It is known that Erythrai, which has a very sheltered port, established relations with Egypt, Cyprus and western countries and developed its trade. Çesme is one of the main tourism centers of our country and has an international reputation, and its now living together with the remains of Erythrai (Ildırı) one of the 12 Ion unity in ancient times.

Çeşme lived under Lydia, Persia, Pergamon (Bergama) Kingdoms, Roman and Byzantine domination. The Port of Çeşme was the closest and most reliable point from Chios Island to the Anatolian shores. For this reason, the port has been able to sustain commercial trade for centuries.

In the last half of the 13rd century and the beginning of the 14th century, the influence of the Genoese, who made a name for the commercial life of Western Anatolia, was seen. In the same period, although the region was under the rule of Çaka Bey (Seljuks) for a while, his dominance was short-lived. Since the end of the 17th century, İzmir, which was a small commercial center where Western Anatolian products were sold, suddenly became commercially superior, and Çeşme Port gradually declined next to İzmir Port and lost its importance.

Cesme today a small county of İzmir, located at the end of the Karaburun peninsula (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cesme). A six-lane highway connects Cesme and Izmir airport. The distance is 93 km and takes an hour to drive.
