| Summary | The study focuses on the Parnaíba Basin in northeastern Brazil, one of the largest Phanerozoic sedimentary basins on the South American platform. Despite efforts in geophysical research, the internal structure and surrounding tectonic blocks remain unclear. Using broadband magnetotelluric data, a three-dimensional model of the electrical structure was constructed along an approximately 1400 km east-west profile. The conductivity observed in the basin is related to a complex history of geological processes such as collisions and the amalgamation of tectonic blocks. The geo-electric model allows delineation of the geometry and variation in resistivity of the lithospheric blocks comprising the Parnaíba Basin. From the Amazonian Craton in the west to the Borborema Province in the east, high resistivity anomalies are observed. In the Amazonian Craton, a conductive lower crust transitioning to a resistive domain towards the east due to mafic volcanic intrusions is identified. In the Borborema Province, resistive and conductive anomalies in the mid to lower crust reveal collisional events in block formation and the existence of a cryptic suture due to the deformation process of the orogenic system. This study significantly contributes to better crustal resolution of the Parnaíba Basin, shedding new light on the tectonic evolution and formation models of Western Gondwana. |
